Triple A Muffler - Catalytic converter Since 1981, “three-way” (oxidation-reduction) catalytic converters have been used in vehicle emission control systems in the U.S. and Canada. A three-way catalytic converter has three tasks:

1. Reduce nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen
2. Oxidize carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide
3. Oxidize unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water

An inefficient catalytic converter can be caused by:
     dirty air filters
     a lack of scheduled oil changes
     severe driving conditions
     poor fuel
     short trips
     excessive heat
     poor vehicle maintenance
